Gelbwasser's specialty has been chemistry, but he also taught a variety of math courses. According to Gelbwasser, he was born and raised in New York City; he received his Bachelor's Degree at NYU and his Masters at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York.
When asked what his favorite part of his job was, Gelbwasser responded, " If I had to pick one thing it would be the personal interaction with the students; they become your friends." The favorite part of his day is the evenings, "after I get past my second cup of coffee," said Gelbwasser, who stated he is not much of a morning person.
When asked how he would like to be remembered at the Mount he said "as somebody who enjoyed what they were doing and worked real hard to do what they do better." Gelbwasser felt there was always room for improvement no matter how good of a job he did.
Gelbwasser said he felt he influenced the students to believe in themselves and always encouraged them to believe they could do things they didn't think they could. One of the best moments in his long career at the Mount was when a student thanked him by saying "you made me believe in myself," said Gelbwasser.
Gelbwasser said he had actually planned on retiring last year but with the economy the way it was, he had trouble selling his home of 32 years in Rutland. He has since sold the house and now currently rents a house in Gardner until the summer sessions are over. Gelbwasser then plans to retire with his wife to his house on the Cape where he can stay up late and watch all the west coast sporting events he wants without having to worry about setting his alarm clock to wake up in the morning. Gelbwasser said he is a huge sports fan and although he will miss the interaction with the students, he looks forward to being able to watch all the games he wants.
