Local residents recently reported a fishing attempt operating in our area. Residents stated that they were receiving calls on their cell phone, from an automated voice, and that the call was coming from their "local financial institution'. The caller stated that the person was receiving the call due to their debit card being compromised. The recording then asked the individual to key in their 16 digit card number, and PIN in order to 'reset' the card.
Individuals receiving these calls should hang up, and call their financial institution directly, to inquire about the status of their debit card or the authenticity of the call. Personal information should never be shared over the phone, or via a mobile device or e-mail, unless you have initiated the request with a trusted source, and verified the number or e-mail address that the information is being sent to. When in doubt, contact your local financial institution.
