Graphic Design majors Madeleine Plaut and Noah Chicoine accepted Best in Show awards on April 22, for their respective categories in the 2010 Graphic Design Exhibit and Competition in front of a record crowd of more than 85 people. The winning pieces were selected from a pool of approximately 235 print and 60 web entries contributed by students majoring in Graphic Design at the Mount.

The annual Spring Graphic Design Exhibit is a competition providing both print and web design students a chance to gather their portfolio's best work and have it judged by professionals and alumni in the field of Graphic Design. The print and web entries were split into groups (nineteen print, nine web) with a First Place and Honorable Mention awarded in each sub-category as well as a Best in Show overall for the print and for the web design entries.

Thirteen alumni and consumers (possible future employers) judged the Print Media entries made up of promotional brochures, advertisements, and other print works. The Web Design category was judged by five Graphic Design Professionals. Judges determined their top five pieces in each group as well as their Best in Show for the Print and Web sections.

Chicoine, a third semester Graphic Design student, won Best in Show for the Print Media category with his promotional brochure for the Tazo Tea Company. About his winning brochure, Chicoine said, "The concept was to look like an old tea box with the individual tea bag spilling out across the piece." Chicoine's winning artwork, as well as many other print works, can still be viewed in the main lobby at the Mount or seen online at http://gallery.me.com/day.design#100029.

Fourth semester Graphic Design student Madeleine Plaut, winner of Best in Show for this year's Web Design category, created a flash animation entitled "Welcome to the Theatre". Plaut's short story animation, approximately two minutes long, is an exercise in animation creation with Adobe Flash. Plaut explained that her method was out of the ordinary for a flash animation because "it was developed solely with one or two tools and then I just drew it by hand with the computer mouse, no extra tools to help me". The Web Design entries and winners can be viewed online at http://www.cgdclass.com/webexhibit2010.html#navbar.

Leslie Cullen, department chair of the Graphic Design program, felt this year was the most successful exhibit yet. "This year's pool of nearly three hundred entries shows a growth of interest in our program since the one hundred entries of only 2 years ago," said Cullen. "Last year we had forty five to fifty people for the awards ceremony and held it in a lecture room, but this year we had to move to the North Café the night of the ceremony because more people kept showing up."
