Inspired by the Little Mermaid, the Japanese anime feature Ponyo is a must see. The film is about a five year old boy, Sosuke, and his friendship with a goldfish princess, Ponyo, who desperately wants to be human. Ponyo's overprotective father, however, thinks otherwise.

The English script, written by Melissa Mathison, is not all that appeals to children and adults alike, but so does the cast. The film features the voices of Hollywood A-list stars like, Tina Fey, Cate Blanchett, Matt Damon, and Noah Cyrus.

Many people are skeptical that young children will not be charmed by the film because of its hand-drawn animation. Although the animation may look old-school, it does not take away from the film's message or charm. Director Miyazaki really does an excellent and magical job in making this simple story into a great animated film.

Ponyo is now out on DVD and is definitely something that any film lover should not miss.
