Jamie Furr is a criminal justice and criminal services major who has been impacted greatly by her involvement in the international club. The importance of developing social networks and raising awareness of different cultures are among the many things that being involved in the club has taught her.

As an older student and single mother, she has a unique perspective on developing social networks and getting involved in extracurricular activities here at the college. She believes, "The College is not just a place to learn, it's also a place to broaden your horizons and social networks." Furr used to feel secluded as a single mom; with her duties and priority to fulfill her daughter's needs before anything else, she felt she couldn't go out and get involved.

Before she joined the international club, Furr felt disconnected as an older student feeling that because of her age she should be separate from everybody and couldn't interact with younger classmates. Now, as a member of the club, she is not afraid to talk to fellow classmates and feels more comfortable among other students. She previously deemed home and school as two separate lives, but is now calling people and joining social networks such as facebook as a result of her involvement.

Furr has also learned the importance of raising awareness of different cultures, and that every culture has its different ideas and thoughts all intertwined. She believes that culture is a way of life, and is enriched by heritage and rituals passed down from generation to generation. Her favorite part of learning about culture in the international club is how it is accepted and "Nobody puts anyone down for how they think, they welcome it."

The opportunity to be in the international club has taught Furr the benefits of getting involved and "broadening your horizon." She loves how the club welcomes everyone's involvement, taking everyone's ideas seriously and listening to what people have to say. "I love that about the club, they involve everybody." She believes strongly that people should be a part of something to avoid feeling depressed or left out, encouraging others to join.
