Like many Mount students, Saska Powell is a member of many clubs. But unlike the other students, she acts as a treasurer for the International Club."
As treasurer, Powell's job is keep track of the money the club has. Powell does this by maintain the profits from the club's fundraisers. Powell said, "We recently had a bake sale and I helped decide the prices. We figured that if each pastry was 25 cents we could make a good amount of money. I was surprised to learn that we made about $280."
Powell also helps come up with fundraiser ideas. She said, "Bake sales are great, but every club has a bake sale. So I came up the idea to have a car wash, which usually makes us about $250. Both of the fundraisers help to cover the New York trips."
The International club's New York trips have become notorious on MWCC's campus. When asked about the trips, Powell said, "This last trip was awesome. One night, we were about to watch a scary movie when club member Analia Fernandez said that she was going to go to bed. After the movie finished, when we went upstairs to go to sleep and we found all the pillows tied to the ceiling. Nobody could figure out what happened and we started freaking out. Eventually we woke Fernandez up asked what happened, and she was bedpan serious when she said, "You have to remember this is New York. [After a long pause] And you just got pranked!" I just laughed and threw a pillow at her. It was great."
The club has taught Powell a lot about herself, including picking a major. Powell said, "Originally, I was a business major, but during a meeting someone said that I should do something I love. And since I've always had a passion for fashion, and because I really did like my business classes, I combined the two to become an interior design major."
Being a club member has also taught Powell to be more confident, responsible, and how to multitask. Powell said, "There are a lot things going on at once. You have to sign papers, encourage people to join and occasionally help the other officers."
Not only has the club been educational for Powell, but it has been a way for her to teach others. Powell said, "I love joking around and having fun, but sometimes you have to be serious. I think I've shown a few members that it's possible to have fun and be serious at the same time."
Powell joined the club nearly three years ago; she says she joined because on orientation day she was looking for friends and was told that the club would be fun. Now Powell happily says that every meeting is fun.
