A Message from the President
Civic Engagement at the Start of the New Decade Reminiscent of Early 2000s

Issue date: 2/2/10 Section: News
Mount Wachusett students and faculty have a history of supporting charitable efforts in Haiti, the poorest country in the western hemisphere. In 2006, the Student Government Association and several student clubs and organizations raised $1,100 for Houses of Haiti, a program run by the international nonprofit organization Partners in Health.
MWCC students have also supported the work of Forward in Health, a nonprofit established by Gardner pediatrician John Mulqueen, M.D., and his wife Paula, an alumna of MWCC's nursing program. The organization is dedicated to providing health care to Haiti's most needy citizens in an area just outside Les Cayes, approximately 140 miles southwest of Port-au-Prince. MWCC Director of Nursing Nancy Duphily and nursing Professor Judy Giacoppe traveled to the Caribbean country with the organization in 2007 to assist in clinic care.Members of the Nursing Club had been planning to travel there on an aid mission this July. As this semester begins, they are taking up a collection to support the work of Forward in Health. In addition, for the past two years, the Nursing Club has sponsored a student in Les Cayes who is studying nursing and was anticipating graduating this year.
Students collaborate on these campus and community initiatives with the office of Student Life and the Center for Democracy & Humanity, housed within the division of Academic Affairs. For more information about current efforts underway and how to help, go to www.mwccconnectsus/haiti.
I am so proud of Mount Wachusett students, alumni, faculty and staff who have worked and continue to work to strengthen local cities and towns through service learning components of academic programs and through many other acts of volunteerism. For those students who are returning this semester, and to those of you who are new to this campus, I am heartened to start this new year and new decade knowing that you are already diligently working to make a difference not only in our part of the world, but in the world.
